It can't be you. It can't be! IT CAN'T BE!
– Mel's last words before Angela shot him through the neck with an arrow at the archery, killing him after he discovered she's a killer and realized Ricky was telling him the truth, regretting beating him nearly to death
Enough! I saw the whole business. You realize how dangerous those things are? You could've taken her eye out. Now, Ronnie's gonna hear about this, and there are gonna be no canteen for a whole week. (to Ricky) And that goes for you, too, on the account of your filthy mouth.
Ricky: What?!
If I EVER hear anything like this again, I'm gonna throw the whole bunch of you outta here, and DON'T THINK I DON'T MEAN IT! Get ready for dinner.
– Mel scolding Billy, Mike, Jimmy and three other boys for throwing water balloons at Angela and fighting with Ricky
I'm finished! That's all that there's to it. Finished! Wiped out!
– Mel after discovering Billy's body at his cabin
I've got you now, you little monster! Now it's my turn!
Ricky: Get the fuck off of me! Leave me alone!
Like you killed Kenny and Billy, just like you left Meg?!
Ricky: I don't know what the fuck you're talking about! I didn't do nothing! Stop it! I didn't do anything, you crazy fuck! Stop it! I didn't do anything!
Liar, liar, liar!
- Mel dragging Ricky into the woods, thinking he's a killer.
"It's like those other times. She gets into trouble, you come to her rescue."
- Mel aggressively grabbing Ricky by the arms, preventing him from rescuing Angela from Meg and Judy who throw her into the water while interrogating him as a suspect for the murders of Kenny and Billy (which it was actually Angela).

Mel Kostic is the secondary antagonist of Sleepaway Camp. He was the owner of Camp Arawak, where he tried to hide the original murder spree until he was driven paranoid and beat Ricky Thomas nearly to death before Angela Baker killed him. He is Angela Baker's 10th victim.
Background[]
Mel owned and operated Camp Arawak in New York state. He has an affair with Meg who allied with Judy.
Films[]
Sleepaway Camp (1983)[]
Mel was in charge of the camp grounds.
He and his head counselor, Ronnie Angelo, supervised the kid's arrival on the first day at Camp Arawak. After several murders occurred, he thought the camp would be closed down.
Mel suspected Ricky of the murders, so he tried interrogating him at first while he was trying to help Angela from being bullied. Ronnie witnessed Mel aggressively grab Ricky by the arms and breaks it up, questioning Mel's behaviour. Later, he goes to meet up with his lover Meg, only to discover her dead body. Realizing she was stabbed down the back, Mel suspects Ricky for the killings again and has a breakdown. He finds Ricky and nearly beats him to death.
Angela appeared moments later and he realized he almost beat Ricky to death for nothing. Mel was killed by Angela shooting him with an arrow through the neck after he discovered that she was the killer and realized Ricky was telling the truth. His body was found by other counselors, campers and officer Frank Breton.
Sleepaway Camp II: Unhappy Campers (1988)[]
Phoebe recounted the Camp Arawak massacre at Camp Rolling Hills and mentioned Mel's grisly death.
Character[]
Mel was the camp owner and was very insecure due to the possibility of losing his camp. He didn't want the kids nor their parents to regard the camp as dangerous. He immediately disliked Ricky for being too loud and aggressive, thus suspecting him as the killer. He was driven desperate when his paramour, Meg, was killed by Angela, which lead to him beating up Ricky.
Behind the Scenes[]
- This was Mike Kellin's last role. He was a veteran of film and TV for decades.
- Mel is without a doubt more of a secondary antagonist as Angela Baker is the true main antagonist.
- Mel is very similar to Mayor Larry Vaughn from the Jaws movies. Both are
- more concerned about the reputation of their businesses than they are the safety of others. Both also try to cover up the incidents that occur and both try to shut down others that try to warn them until it's too late. Although Mayor Vaughn in the end learns that he is in the wrong, Mel learns this when it is already too late which would lead to his demise.
