Hal is a minor comic relief character. His trips and complaints about Mel ease the audience before the shocking image of Kenny's corpse. He comes off as a meathead jock, but like Ronnie, he is sympathetic and kind, and hates bullying and mean treatment of others. He and Ricky then help Angela out of the water after she was thrown in there by Meg and Judy. He was concerned for Angela's well-being, and verbally admonished Judy and Meg for their cruelty.
